We live in an era of smartphones and smart devices, so why not a smart tape measure? That’s the premise behind Bagel, a phenomenally successful Kickstarter project that has already received more than half a million dollars in funding pledges to innovate the way we calculate the dimensions of everyday objects. The Bagel is the world’s smartest tape measure, capable of accurately capturing the size of nearly any object – everything from a new piece of furniture to your waist.
The Bagel stands out from traditional measuring tapes because it has three distinct modes for determining the length, height or width of objects. For example, if you need to calculate the dimensions of flat or curved surfaces, you’ll want to use the String mode, which is exactly that – a retractable string that can extend up to 10 feet in length.
Then there’s Wheel mode, which is a way to ascertain the size of oddly shaped or highly curved surfaces with just one hand. Finally, what if you need to find out the dimensions of a remote object up to 16 feet away?
For that, you’d use Remote mode, which uses an ultrasonic sensor and laser pointer to record the measurement. Point, shoot and you’ll soon have a determination of the object’s size.
And, of course, Bagel wouldn’t be a “smart” tape measure if it couldn’t sync with your smartphone, right? That’s why Bagel comes with Bluetooth connectivity, enabling you to send data to the Bagel mobile app on your smartphone. From there, you can organize, analyze and even graph the measurements. Say, for example, you’ve been recording the daily size of your waist using Bagel – you could take all those calculations and graph them over time, helping you spot the ups and downs of your weight loss regimen.
In order to organize and tag all the measurements within Bagel, you have the option of using voice memos. That saves you the time and hassle of jotting down notes on a sheet of paper and then storing those notes in analog form. It’s so much easier to store those in digital form, using just your voice. Bagel then converts those voice memos into text, so you can find them later.
Plus, with Bagel’s patent-pending technology, the measurements are extremely accurate and can be viewed on a digital LED readout. No more squinting at tiny numbers on a traditional tape measures! Plus, Bagel has internal memory that can save up to 100 calculations and voice memos, so you can easily find what you’re looking for at any time.
It’s easy to see how Bagel could be useful for a number of people – everyone from the DIY interior decorator to a fashion designer trying to get all the precise measurements on a new piece of clothing. Bagel is built with a lithium polymer battery that lasts up to 24 hours and averages 8 hours with constant use, so it’s possible to take Bagel with you to work or wherever you go, and then recharge it at night using a USB cable.
This all-purpose functionality is the real allure of Bagel – it’s an all-in-one system to calculate the dimensions of any surface (flat, round, curved, uneven) and for any environment, at any time. It’s designed to be used with either one or two hands and it integrates easily into your digital lifestyle via Bluetooth. As the founder of Bagel Labs points out in the Kickstarter promo video for Bagel, it’s time we innovate the way we measure things.
